Root Canal Treatment in Clearwater, FL

Save your tooth and stop the pain with expert root canal therapy. Dr. Cannady provides gentle, comfortable treatment with advanced technology and sedation options.

What is a Root Canal?

A root canal is a restorative dental procedure designed to save a tooth that has become severely infected or damaged. Inside each tooth is a soft tissue called the pulp, which contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. When the pulp becomes infected due to deep decay, trauma, or cracks in the tooth, it can cause severe pain and lead to an abscess if left untreated.

During root canal therapy, Dr. Cannady carefully removes the infected pulp, thoroughly cleans and disinfects the inside of the tooth, and then seals it to prevent future infection. The tooth is then typically restored with a dental crown to protect it and restore full function.

Despite their reputation, modern root canals are relatively comfortable procedures that can be completed in one or two visits. With advanced anesthesia and sedation options available at Cannady Dental, most patients experience little to no discomfort during treatment.

Why Root Canals Are Needed

Several dental issues can lead to pulp infection and the need for root canal therapy.

Deep Decay

When cavities are left untreated, decay can penetrate deep into the tooth and reach the pulp chamber, causing infection and severe pain that requires root canal therapy to save the tooth.

Infection or Abscess

Bacterial infection of the pulp can lead to a painful abscess at the root tip. Root canal treatment removes the infected tissue, eliminates the infection, and prevents it from spreading to surrounding bone and tissues.

Trauma or Injury

A blow to the face, sports injury, or accident can damage the pulp inside a tooth even if there's no visible crack. The trauma can cause the pulp to die, requiring root canal therapy.

Cracks or Fractures

Chips, cracks, or fractures in teeth create pathways for bacteria to enter the pulp chamber, leading to infection and inflammation that often requires root canal treatment to resolve.

Repeated Dental Work

Multiple procedures on the same tooth, such as fillings or crowns, can eventually irritate the pulp to the point where it becomes inflamed or infected, necessitating root canal therapy.

Severe Sensitivity

Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures, lingering pain after exposure, or spontaneous throbbing pain are often signs that the pulp is inflamed or infected and may require root canal treatment.

The Root Canal Procedure

Understanding what to expect during your root canal treatment can help ease any concerns.

1

Anesthesia & Numbing

Dr. Cannady will numb the area with local anesthesia to ensure you're completely comfortable. Sedation options are also available for anxious patients. You'll feel no pain during the procedure.

2

Isolation & Access

A small protective sheet called a rubber dam is placed around the tooth to keep it clean and dry. Then, a small opening is created in the top of the tooth to access the infected pulp chamber.

3

Cleaning & Shaping

Using specialized instruments, Dr. Cannady carefully removes the infected pulp, cleans the root canals thoroughly, and shapes them to prepare for filling. The canals are irrigated with antibacterial solution.

4

Filling & Sealing

The cleaned canals are filled with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha, which seals the space. The tooth is then sealed with a temporary or permanent filling. A crown is often placed later to protect the tooth.

Benefits of Root Canal Treatment

Root canal therapy offers numerous advantages over extracting a damaged tooth.

Saves Your Natural Tooth

Root canal therapy allows you to keep your natural tooth rather than having it extracted. Preserving your natural tooth is always the preferred option whenever possible, as it maintains your natural bite and jaw alignment.

Eliminates Pain

Contrary to popular belief, root canals don't cause pain—they relieve it! The procedure removes the infected tissue that's causing severe toothache, swelling, and sensitivity, providing immediate relief from discomfort.

Prevents Extraction

Root canal treatment saves teeth that would otherwise need to be extracted due to infection. Avoiding extraction means you won't need more expensive replacement options like dental implants or bridges later on.

Stops Infection Spread

An untreated tooth infection can spread to surrounding teeth, gums, and even enter the bloodstream, causing serious health complications. Root canal therapy removes the infection and prevents it from spreading.

Quick Recovery

Most patients return to normal activities the next day. Any discomfort is typically mild and easily managed with over-the-counter pain relievers. Recovery is much faster than tooth extraction and implant placement.

Restores Function

After root canal treatment and crown placement, your tooth functions just like it did before the infection. You can eat, chew, and smile with complete confidence and comfort.
