Checkups & Cleanings in Clearwater, FL

Preventive care to keep your smile healthy and bright. Regular checkups and professional cleanings are the foundation of excellent oral health.

The Foundation of Good Oral Health

Regular dental checkups and professional cleanings are the cornerstone of preventive dentistry. These routine visits allow Dr. Cannady to catch potential problems early, prevent cavities and gum disease, and keep your smile looking and feeling its best.

During your visit, we'll thoroughly examine your teeth, gums, and mouth, take any necessary X-rays, and provide a comprehensive cleaning to remove plaque and tartar buildup that regular brushing can't reach.

We recommend most patients visit us every six months for optimal oral health, though some may benefit from more frequent cleanings depending on their individual needs.

Schedule Your Cleaning

What Happens During a Teeth Cleaning in Clearwater

Every visit begins with a thorough dental exam. Dr. Cannady checks your teeth, gums, bite, and soft tissues, reviews your digital X-rays when needed, and screens for early signs of decay, gum disease, and oral cancer — so small problems get caught before they become big ones.

Then our hygienist Keelyn takes over your professional teeth cleaning. She gently removes the plaque and tartar that brushing and flossing can’t reach, polishes away surface stains, and finishes with fluoride to strengthen your enamel. Her approach is unhurried and gentle — if you have sensitive teeth or it’s been years since your last cleaning, she’ll adjust her technique and pace so you stay comfortable the whole time.

Most patients benefit from a teeth cleaning in Clearwater every six months, though some do best on a three- or four-month schedule. If you’ve been searching for a teeth cleaning or dental cleaning near you, our office at 1651 Rainbow Dr serves Clearwater, Dunedin, Largo, Safety Harbor, and Palm Harbor. If your gums show signs of infection, a routine cleaning may not be enough — learn how a deep cleaning differs from a regular cleaning on our gum disease treatment page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about checkups, cleanings, and preventive dental care.

We recommend most patients visit every six months for a routine checkup and cleaning. However, some patients with gum disease or other oral health concerns may benefit from more frequent visits, such as every three or four months. Dr. Cannady will recommend the best schedule for your individual needs.
For most patients, dental cleanings are completely comfortable. You may feel some mild pressure or scraping sensations, but it shouldn't be painful. If you have sensitive teeth or gums, let us know—we can take extra care to ensure your comfort, and numbing gel is available if needed.
A typical checkup and cleaning appointment takes about 45 minutes to one hour. This includes the examination, X-rays (if needed), cleaning, and time to discuss any findings or questions you may have.
Most PPO dental plans include preventive benefits for checkups and cleanings. Cannady Dental is a fee-for-service (out-of-network) practice, so we are not in-network with any plan — but we file claims for all PPO plans on your behalf, and your insurer sends reimbursement directly to you based on your out-of-network benefits. We'll help you understand your coverage before your visit. We do not participate in Medicaid or HMO/DMO plans.
As a fee-for-service practice, we quote our fees upfront — the price depends on whether you need a routine cleaning or a deeper cleaning for gum disease, and you'll know the cost before we begin. New patients can start with our $99 new patient special, which includes a comprehensive exam, full digital X-rays, and a personalized treatment plan, so you'll know exactly what your cleaning will involve and cost before scheduling it. We file claims for all PPO insurance plans and offer flexible financing.
Don't worry—we never judge, and you're not alone! If it's been several years since your last cleaning, you may have more tartar buildup, which could require a deeper cleaning (scaling and root planing). We'll assess your needs and explain any recommended treatments. The important thing is taking that first step to get back on track.
